Language Levels
Thinking of taking a language module in NTU? Well, here's what you'll need to know.
In NTU, under your BDEs (AKA Unrestricted Electives for the older folks), you can take language modules! This is a great way to broaden your horizons or spice up your semester. These modules are held by the Centre for Modern Language, & are also known as CML Language Courses.
However, there are different levels - difficulty levels - to the language modules in NTU. Read on for more info.
What are Language Levels?
Basically, this is NTU's way of accounting for any level of competency you have in the language you want to study. If you're a complete beginner, you'll go to language level 1. But if you have any background at all - be it in a formal institute or self-taught, you might qualify for a higher level.

And if you've already taken a module at Level 1, you can level up in the next semester and take it at a higher level if you want to continue growing in that language.
Placement Tests
So how do you know what level to take? Well, if you are a complete beginner with no background at all, you can simply register for the Level 1 CML course in STARS. You'll have to formally declare your lack of prior knowledge. Do note that if you choose to be dishonest and get found out, there will be consequences. Honesty is the best policy!

If you have any previous background in the language, even if you don't remember anything you learnt, it is best to take a Placement Test anyway. If you would like to take the language at a higher level, and have not previously taken the lower level version of the CML course, you'll also need to take the Placement Test. You won't be able to add the module on STARS until after taking the test.

The test MUST be taken before the deadline, which is normally the end of Week 1. Visit the official NTU webpage on CML Placement Tests for more information, and to find out how to take the test.
